Pie Irons

ADZ sent us pie irons for Christmas this year (thanks guys!!) we decided to take advantage of the warm weather to initiate them through a traditional fire rite (Kyle's own words).

Baking in the fire pit.

It is a three person job to load them up without a good table...next time I might make up the sanwiches in the house and take them outside to bake.

Our last treat, we made some cornbread with pie filling (lemon here) they were very good! Next time I will try some biscuit dough with filling also. A great gift and a fun dinner!

  1. Yay! What kind of sandwiches did you make? Biscuit dough sounds like a good idea for containing gooey fillings. So glad you had an early opportunity to try them out!

  2. Also wondering - did one shape work better than the other?

  3. Looks interesting, and delicious. Have to check them out next time I'm up there. I love a bonfire, except when its below zero, then I love to be inside.

  4. It was WAY above zero, some fun sledding and a very nice night to hang by the fire. The ski and lettuce wraps went by the wayside, I forgot to mention that, they are back on the menu for tonight. We made cheese and leftover steak-bits and cheese, they were pretty much a cheese steak! Yum!
The square one is better for sandwiches but the circle one worked better overall...Kyle was muttering something about bending the handles closer together on the square one. I think if we trim the bread a little it would help, it is good to smoosh it together between the edges, but it also wants to stick there. We used some burger buns in the round one...I think the cornbread dough worked better though it was harder to get done, the last one was raw!
I think it will just take practice. Yummy practice! They took quite a while to feed everybody for dinner, but I can see it being a really great snack or dessert!
